Risograph Test Print
First pre-calibration, multi-color Risograph test print

The first batch of new inks, masters, and cylinders for Rocinante finally arrived this week after a nearly two month wait — and so it seemed fitting to promptly put the machine through the paces by running a number of test charts and a demo print. This identified a minor calibration and timing issue with the master making unit as artwork was rendered compressed along the circumference of the ink cylinder.

Thankfully, with a little help from the Riso service manuals this was an easy fix. I ran a handful of specially made charts to measure the distortion and dialed in the necessary compensation to correct the problem. The real test will be to re-run this print and to prove it actually worked, but preliminary tests suggest it should register as close to perfectly as a Riso can.
